– Manchester’s waterfront destination The Quays reveals Christmas line-up –
Greater Manchester’s stunning waterfront destination The Quays will be lighting up this festive season with a line-up of Christmas events, from digital art exhibitions and light shows to family-friendly theatre performances and food and gift markets. Boasting some of UK’s most spectacular attractions all within one square mile, The Quays is a great destination for a day out or overnight retreat, offering visitors the chance to immerse themselves in all the magic and wonder of Christmas.
Get lost in a maze of reflections and illuminations with Lightwaves, a newly commissioned interactive installation coming to The Lowry Plaza, 12 – 17 December. The digital work has been created by Danish artist Mads Christensen and features 12 beautiful mirrored columns. By day, these reflect the image of the viewer, but by night the LED lights behind the two-way glass will react to human movement to ignite a Cathedral of Mirrors. The installation has been commissioned by Quays Culture, which works to bring inspiring works from world-class artists to The Quays.
At The Lowry, a spectacular waterside venue housing theatres and galleries, visitors can enjoy the very best in performance and visual art. Running 14 December – 2 January is one of the greatest musicals of all time, The Sound of Music. Marking the 50th anniversary of the original film, this new stage adaptation based on Baroness Maria von Trapp’s 1949 autobiography will enchant and enthral the young and the young at heart.
Other family friendly shows not to be missed include Olivier Award nominated West End hit Hetty Feather (Jacqueline Wilson), Emma Reeve’s Snow Child and a stage adaptation of film comedy Mr Popper’s Penguins.
In the galleries, which house the world’s largest collection of paintings and drawings by LS Lowry, visitors will discover contemporary art exhibition, ‘Right Here, Right Now’. Opening 14 November until 28 February 2016, this collection of digitally-influenced work seeks to challenge perceptions of what art can be and the digital systems that surround us.
Head to the Lowry Outlet for The Enchanted Christmas Market, 13 – 15 November, where artisan stallholders will be selling a selection of handmade Christmas gifts and regional festive fare. Taking place in the outlet’s open air Plaza, visitors will also discover ice sculptures, ‘climb in’ snow globes, a traditional carousel and a winter wonderful bandstand with live bands and choirs.
Open for late night shopping until 8pm throughout December, Lowry Outlet offers Christmas shoppers savings of up to 70% at high street favourites including Molton Brown, Yankee Candle and The Body Shop.
Those looking to make a weekend of it can stay overnight at one of the top-quality hotels in the area, including The Old Trafford Lodge at Emirates Old Trafford, home of Lancashire County Cricket Club, and the Copthorne Hotel Manchester.
New to the area is Hotel Football, the world’s first football hotel, located on the doorstep of Manchester United’s OId Trafford stadium. The four-star hotel’s restaurant, Café Football, will be offering special festive menus and cocktails throughout November and Decemeber.
