On a rather wet and cold Monday afternoon I was invited to attend a press release in Salford at The Lowry for The Addams Family Musical which is due to arrive in theatre in Salford August 29th-9th September. With a brilliant choice of casting, Samantha Womack as Morticia, Carrie Hope Fletcher as Wednesday and Les Dennis as Uncle Fester, this is a show not to be missed!
I was able to interview the lovely Carrie Fletcher & Oliver Ormson after they performed a melody from the musical called”Crazier Than You”.
So How’s the tour going so far?
Carrie: Loving it!
Oliver: Yeah absolutely loving it! We’re having such a great time on the road, it’s a great thing to be part of such a great show.
Cool! So what’s the best thing to happen on tour so far?
Carrie: we have cast meals out sometimes after shows which is always really nice, there’s a thing about tour life that usually when you’re in a stationary show that’s in the West End you’ll go home after the show but here we’re staying with each other, so we can never escape each other (laughter) but it some places like Cornwall, we’ll all stay in a big house if there’s 12 of us so we’re really looking forward to that, the guy who plays Lurch (Dickon Gough) will cook for us for a night which is nice.
So it’s like a family away from family?
Carrie: Yeah exactly, it’s really nice
Oliver: Yeah I totally agree, and for me it’s also nice to be at different venues and experience different places, we were in Canterbury a few weeks ago which was absolutely beautiful, so having that freedom to just travel and enjoy the UK is quite cool!
So Carrie you currently film for a vlog everyday, do you Oliver film a vlog at all?
Oliver: I don’t do a vlog!
Carrie: But you’ve come on my vlog quite a bit!
Oliver: Haha yeah I have noticed that there’s a bit of a movement going on because some of the comments on Carries vlogs are very complimentary about me so maybe it’s time I bite the bullet and do a vlog, I don’t know what I’d say, probably just my normal comedy act.
Carrie: Yeah Oliver’s constantly filled with jokes, but there like dad jokes.
So only jokes he’d laugh at then?
Carrie: Pretty much yeah.
Oliver: Yeah exactly, that’s why i’m a bit scared to do a vlog, cos I might find it really funny and it might just bore everyone else.
Well I’m sure you’d get a few tips of Carrie.
Carrie: Well I might sabotage it…
Oliver: Haha thanks. But that’s the thing when you’re playing opposite someone who does so much it does inspire you to spread your wings and tread the boards in another direction.
Carrie: Awww I’m glad I’m such a good influence on you.
Speaking of influence, Carrie you film a vlog, you sing, you dance, you rehearse for the show, you’re writing a book, you do so much, how the hell do you stay motivated!?!?
Carrie: I don’t sleep and I have no friends… I’m kidding! I just get bored really fast so if there’s just a few minutes in the day I’ll just fill it up by doing something, that’s how my YouTube channel started I was unemployed and bored, it was just a happy accident that snowballed and became what it’s become.
Have you gone to any YouTube conventions yourself?
Carrie: Yeah I want to Vidcon earlier this year in Amsterdam which was amazing, it was my first Vidcon, and I got to promote The Addams family too as I sang “pulled” which was really cool as it was like my two worlds colliding.
Sounds awesome! If you could offer one piece of advice to any young person about their future and their career what would you say?
Carrie: I used to worry a lot as a kid, and know I look back at and I wish I hadn’t worries so much as I worried about things that didn’t need worrying about, I think it’s Newt Scamander from Fantastics Beasts that says “worrying means you suffer twice” which is so true.
Oliver: I didn’t really know what I wanted to do until I was 18, for me I would say don’t stress about it, life will pan out, just enjoy it .
Last question just to round things up, what do you think of The Lowry?
Carrie: Incredible! I’ve never been here before and I love it!
Oliver: Yeah this is probably the closest theatre to where I’m from Birchwood, and I remember coming here and watching amateur productions, so it wasn’t even the main theatre and from that I was like I’d love to do that, so to be coming here with The Addams Family is a bit of a dream come true really!
The Addams Family will be coming to The Lowry August 29th.
